My Second Story – The Millionaire Refugee
I am a refugee from war-torn Liberia. A few years ago, my country Liberia fell into a brutal civil war. War is a bad thing. In war people die. I lost many of my relatives and close friends. I came close to death on several occasions but I was fortunate to escape with my life.
Ours was a particularly brutal civil war because it was a tribal war. And the irony is we all look alike therefore except one was able to speak multiple languages, there was always the risk of him being killed by one faction or the other.
Most of the fighting was done in the city centre. In the middle of a city, there were no frontlines. The front of a house could belong to one faction while the back belong to the other. Making the mistake and crossing the wrong frontline meant instant death.
I survived and escaped to neighbouring countries. In those countries, I lived in deplorable conditions in refugees camps after refugee camps. Ate and drank things you will never imagine.
I remember returning to my country after a few years in Europe, when I saw the water my brother was drinking, I felt physically sick. But I drank far worse water than that during the war.
When I escaped from my country, I travelled in one country after the next trying to find a better country to seek refuge.
When I could not find one, I sat my eyes on Europe. I had no money, no travel documents, but I was determined to reach European soil no matter the cost.
My journey to Europe took me through the Saharan Desert where I walked for days without sleep for fear of losing my organs to Bedouins if I fell asleep. For me being imprisoned in Europe for illegal entry was better than having my organs removed by Bedouins while I am still alive.
When I arrived in Europe, reminiscent of my situation in Africa, I found myself in one refugee camp after the other in country after country all over Europe. After years of wandering around Europe, I ended up in the UK.
I arrived in the UK with no prospect of having a decent job. After few months of working in Tesco, I left to work as a security officer. I worked as a security officer for a few months, then quickly came to the conclusion that I was smarter than my bosses, therefore, if they could run a business, I could do better than them.
My conclusion turned out to be true: all the security companies I worked for have ceased to exist.
Truth be told, it was not all rosy from the start. I gained my first client more than six months after establishing my company. What I did not realise then was, running a successful business did not require IQ alone, it also required the ability to sell.
Despite my inability to sell, by the second year of business, my revenue had reached a million dollars.
You just cannot imagine how that felt. I, a refugee from Africa, running a million bucks business!
But my bubble bust when the first financial crisis hit in 2008. My business almost disappeared from the business landscape as my clients were taken out by the crisis.
It seemed the beautiful story of the refugee who became a millionaire was on the brink of grinding to a halt.
I noticed very strange things happening during those periods. While my company and other companies with similar management like mine struggled, some security companies were striving.
It was like a mystery to me.
The question that kept popping into my mind was: what was it that they were doing right, that I was doing wrong?
Answer: those security companies that flourished understood the importance of marketing and a good business model.
I learnt a very important lesson from the 2008 financial crisis and the lesson is this: marketing is the lifeblood of any business.
Without the ability to sell as an entrepreneur, you do not have a chance.
It was disheartening to watch my business that I have struggled to build just melt away from the surface of the business landscape.
But my past turned out to be my greatest asset in those dark days.
I have seen war, I have experienced suffering, I have lived in deplorable dehumanising conditions in refugees camps, I have drank water that will make the ordinary mindcringe, I have trekked the Saharan desert under 40 degrees Celsius and I havefought to keep my organs from the hands of Bedouins.
So my business in crisis was like a stroll in the park.
I sat out to find answers because I was convinced (just as I was in Africa with no money and passport that I was going to Europe) that there was an answer. My search for answers led me to be trained by the best business consultants, coaches and marketing minds in the world.

How I got into Consulting and How I Have Done So Far? After learning the concept of market segmentation from my trainings and coaching, I made the decision to focus exclusively on retail security. Prior to that, we did every type of security, it did not matter if we had the expertise or not. I also decided we were going to be the best retail security company in the UK.
To achieve my goal, I embarked on massive research into retail loss prevention. It was during my research that I discovered that retail loss prevention was not just about shoplifting or internal theft. It also involved policies and procedures, store design, visual merchandising display and above all profit protection.
As I discussed with other loss prevention consultants around the UK and Europe, I came to the conclusion that I was probably the only person in the UK who had come upon the revelation that loss prevention was not only about theft.
I faced an uphill battle to sell a concept that I regarded as a simple concept. Despite the fact that all the data and figures were evident, it did not matter because facts don’t sell.
It was then I learnt another very critical marketing lesson: effective selling demands speaking to the conversation already in people’s heads. Introducing a new conversation in peoples mind is one of the most difficult things to do.

I remember landing in one country, as I was being chauffeured to the hotel, tears streamed down my eyes as I thought back to all the things I had gone through to get there.
My question to myself was: why didn’t I learn this five or ten years ago?
When I entered the room I started jumping on the bed like Julia Robert in Pretty Woman. Kept saying to myself:it happen for me, it happen for me…
The question I would like you to answer is this: why did I receive the call?
Why didn’t all those retail consultants who have been consulting for 20 yearsreceive the call?
Answer: It was my ability to sell myself.
I did not receive the call because of what I knew;I got the call because I had the ability to market myself.
I understood the conversation going on in the heads of my prospect; therefore I tweaked my sales message to get in tune with what they already knew.

I can guess there are three things going through your head right now:
